Goma Town city tour

This is the capital of the North Kivu province. It is one of the DRCongo's best connected cities. In the year of 2002 the looming Nyiragongo volcano erupted and the lava buried most of the town's streets, particularly the center. Since then, Goma is a city under construction. In most suburbs, water and electricity supplies are still erratic to the point of nonexistence. The town itself is worth a visit by day, and at night the famous Congolese nightlife springs to life.

Goma is also the base to climb Nyiragongo volcano, to see the mountain Gorillas tracked in Virunga National Park, to do a game drive in Virunga National Park or to begin a fascinating overland to Kisangani, and cruise on the Congo river up to Kinshasa. Other attractions you may see in Goma are: the green lake (a beautiful small body of water in a volcanic crater Near the lake are several pits where volcanic ash is being mined and turned into bricks), the lava that burnt the town in 2002, the touristic market called Virunga, the big cathedral destroyed by the lava, the handcraft shops, the pygmies around the city, the traditional dancers who express the emotion of the country.
